Regular ballpoint pen inks tend to be quite viscous, requiring a certain amount of pressure to get a smooth, consistent line. To remedy this problem, Uni developed an innovative hybrid ink for the Jetstream, creating a low-viscosity ink that allows for effortless flow. The ink is also fortified with extra pigment to produce darker lines than most ballpoint pen inks. Despite its runnier texture, Uni also formulated the ink to dry quickly, making it left-hander friendly.

To accommodate this hybrid ink, Uni updated the mechanics of the pen with a "twin ball" system. The built-in spring pushes the ball at the pen tip forward, preventing the ink from leaking when not in use. The ball's "twin" in the ink refill moves in the direction of the pen. When the pen is pointing down, the ball rests on the gate, controlling the amount of ink that flows to the tip. When the pen points up, the ball prevents the ink from flowing backwards.
